Short mat bowling has been played in the Earl Spencer Pavilion at Herne Bay Bowling Club for over 10 years during the months from October to April – the end of the outdoor season and the beginning of the next.
The club has two mats and a membership of over 70 full and social members who enjoy not only very competitive games of bowls, but also each other’s company, a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit – and on occasions a drink from the bar.
Those of you who do not know short mat bowls – a block of wood in the centre of the mat is
meant to be avoided - but is not always! – and when hit, a local charity benefits, as the offender pays!
Herne Bay short mat division elected not to play in a local league, but plays one or two matches against other clubs and in a domestic league.
